Each year I try to come up with a creative way for my college and career bound Seniors to experience the connections and continuity of history. It's important that they understand that what we're teaching about the past doesn't exist in a vacuum; instead, it's a vibrant and exciting part of our present as well.
This year, I'd like to add a literacy component to their experience by asking them to read "An Edible History of Humanity", which connects the evolution of man and civilization with what we eat. By reading the book and participating in discussion groups and Socratic seminars, students will analyze the important world events shaped by what we eat. They'll be able to connect how food changed us, and how we changed food, and what that means for the future of humanity.
After my students complete the book, they will embark on a culinary feast, creating some of the foods they've read about in the context of a historical event.
Although I will teach over 100 students in World History this year, I am asking for a single class set of 30 books to use this year.
