Owl pellets bring primary and secondary consumers to life!
By funding this life science project, all 100 of my 5th grade students will receive a chance to dissect an owl pellet and investigate the rodent(s) the owl consumed for energy. Several students are hesitant at first to dive in because, yes, it is owl regurgitation. But once the gloves are on and bones start to fall out on the petri dish, oohs and ahhs can be heard around the classroom.
Dissecting an owl pellet provides an investigative experience where students make predictions, use critical thinking skills, and participate in collaborative discussions. Students are provided additional resources that help them match their findings to skeletons of rodents, so predictions can be refined. Topics we will discuss include primary versus secondary consumers, food chains and webs, and the energy flow in an ecosystem.
Please help me bring science to life in my classroom through an owl pellet dissection experience!
