My students come from low income families and receive free breakfast and lunch. They are culturally diverse. Many of my students have parents that do not speak English or live in a one parent household. This year I am teaching Pre Kindergarten to 8th grade along with multiple special education classes. Some of my students are learning disabled and have emotional disabilities. My students have limited resources to become culturally knowledgeable or aesthetically literate. They are generally not exposed to art and do not visit museums on a regular basis.
For all my students both the art room is a safe haven. Some are successful here where they might not be in any other classroom. We turn "mistakes" into "happy surprises" and their self esteem thrives.
