The introduction to cell theory and cell reproduction in my curriculum begins with the historic development of the microscope. We spend several days discussing a timeline of events leading up to the discovery of cell theory. Naturally, the invention of the microscope plays a key role.
While there are many good virtual microscope websites, nothing can compare to students being able to actually use a microscope hands-on to see the wonder found under the lens. Experiencing first hand the small microorganisms found in pond water is the introductory activity I like to use with my students when discussing the history of the microscope. Later in this unit of study, I would have students examining animal cell mitosis slides.
Unfortunately, our school's science lab is outdated and severely lacks functional microscopes that students can utilize and enjoy.
