My school has over 98% of the children living in a household in poverty. The population is diverse with 70% Hispanic, 25% African-American, 3% Caucasian, and 2% multiracial students. We struggle each year to make adequate growth. Our current level of proficiency reflects many of the challenges faced by the school and the population served. The school is a community school located in a neighborhood identified by a high rate of poverty and illiteracy. They struggle each year to catch up to their peers and meet promotion standards. The school serves a large population of English Language Learners who come to school with a variety of language abilities and educational needs. While the school faces many obstacles educating the students this is not a reflection of the potential or the ability of the students within the school. The students and parents have very little materially to support the education of their children.
