Word work is essential to helping students become flexible with how words work. Magnetic white boards give students the opportunity to not only practice writing letters and words on white boards, but to use magnetic letters to make and break words.
Using magnetic letters allows students to pull apart parts of words so they can learn the various spelling patterns such as sh, ch, ing, etc. We can also use magnetic letters to easily change letters within the word so they learn how a word they know can help them learn new words. For example, students can make the word 'look' then by analogy make 'book', 'cook' 'shook' and even 'cooking'. Manipulating magnetic letters helps students see how words work through play and discovery.
White boards are an excellent way for students to practice writing. We can use the lined sides of the boards to practice letter formation and the blank sides to bring the word to fluency. White boards allow for mistakes to be easily wiped away - and then give the opportunity to begin again. We also use white boards to practice writing our word wall words, sentence dictation, and to create word ladders. White boards are an excellent tool for any student practicing a skill - they can try it then simply wipe it away and try again.
