My students attend a school for the Deaf in New York, which specializes in meeting the specific needs of Deaf students and provides them direct access to information. Within the school they can engage in direct conversations with their peers, teachers, and others. Outside of school they are limited especially when many of the children come from non-signing or even non-English speaking homes. My students take in and express information amazingly "through the air" using sign language but have difficulty taking in and expressing information using written language. Each student is unique and each tries his or her best to excel.
