I serve 5th grade students who either live in the "projects" or in small apartments often shared between families. Over 98% percent of the students are eligible for the free breakfast, lunch and dinner programs provided at our school. Many of my students have never seen the beach, although it is only 3 miles away. My students are often traumatized by the frequent sound of gunshots and few can claim they do not know someone who has experienced violence. Parents are frequently unable to help their children, not because they don't want to, but because of home language issues and the pressure of working several jobs to provide basic necessities. School is a place where opportunity and options are presented to engage and create a safe learning environment.
