Imagine teaching students who astound you with their brilliance. Then, imagine teaching students with special needs, such as visual processing disorders, ADD, and emotional disturbance. And if you can imagine that you would find those two scenarios in one classroom, you have found your way into one of my 10th grade English classes. As a teacher in a school with no opportunities for advanced English in the 10th grade and one which is progressively mainstreaming its special education students, I have a unique challenge waiting for me each day at work. I must push my high level learners while ensuring that I do not alienate my lower level learners and leave them behind. I do all of this in a school that doesn't always have the resources to support me.
