My 7th graders live in a historical neighborhood on Chicago's southwest side. They are eager to learn and are easily engaged when they see connections between what they are learning and the real world.
A challenge I have experienced with teaching my students is using a textbook that is outdated and leaves little room for engagement. Furthermore, many of my students struggle to read the textbook because of it's complexity and dry nature. My students read at various levels, many of them reading below grade level. Asking them to read text that is too difficult only causes frustration and disinterest.
