I have the great honor of being a middle school music teacher. I work with a bunch of incredible kids who face serious adversity on a daily basis. The middle school that I work in is in California and is three blocks away from the largest housing project in our city. The majority of students are minority students from low income households. Many of our students are underachieving. Our students did not ask to be born into poverty. They did not ask to struggle. They just want to be kids who can have fun and learn without worrying about things that middle school students should not worry about. Our school is a safe haven for many of our students.
