My school is a Title 1 (i.e., high need, low income) urban high school; approximately 70% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. Our demographic is primarily children of color, with a large number of them being immigrants representing multitude of countries from six of seven continents. That being said, our student population is easily among the most diverse in the country. Our school not only embraces the diversity and difference of our students, we encourage it as well.
With this in mind, I focus many of my lessons on language, identity, power, and culture. My students are curious, motivated, and eager to learn, so I am constantly in search of books that bring these topics to life and are relevant to my kids.
