I work close to a university so my students are very diverse. Although we are not a low income school, we have many students who are learning English. I love that I will have children who speak English, Mandarin, Korean, Tagalog, Spanish, and Russian (just to name a few) each year in my class. No matter what their background, kindergarteners are eager to learn and love to be read to. They are like little sponges, soaking up everything around them, and I am always amazed and delighted at how quickly they learn to speak and read. Often, they just need more opportunities to hear the language--the rhythm and prosody, the rich vocabulary, and what fluent readers sound like. Even those who are native English speakers benefit.
