My high school takes college readiness very seriously. We have graduated 2 classes already and 100% of our graduated seniors were accepted and enrolled in a 4 year college. This is especially remarkable for a school serving low-income, minority students in Chicago. Our students are successful because they are relentless. However, many of our students struggle to persist in college because they are not yet armed with a confidence in their own academic abilities. Oftentimes, a lack of resources and technology make it difficult for our students to produce work for "real" audiences outside of a classroom setting. Right now, our students are persisting in college at a higher rate than most other students, period. Regardless of race or socio-economic background. However, an average of 50% college-persistence is still not enough. If the world is truly going to change, 100% of our students need to be successful in the post-secondary option they choose.
