Imagine a first grader being able to see that 6 + 7 is the same as 5 + 5 + 3. On a Rekenrek, you can see that because you see on the first line, 6 is 5 (red) + 1 (white) and on the next line, 7 is 5 (red) + 2 (white). Add your reds first, then your whites and you have a more effective way to find the answer than just counting them all. You also build the ability to see relationships between numbers.
Having a class set will ensure that each student will have a tool to help them solve problems on their own. Students will be able to see the math problems as they move the counting beads. Having a well made set of Rekenreks will provide years of service to a great number of students. A nice bonus included with this class set is a big Rekenrek that I can use to model problem solving with students.
