My 2nd graders love getting to interact with each other and teach each other new concepts. Their greatest moments is when they can feel like they are the teacher and can explain how to solve a problem. Many of my students come from low income homes, and do not have many opportunities to practice Math in every day life. Their parents have high expectations for them to be successful and achieve many things they did not. As their teacher, I want to make sure that I am building a firm foundation for them. To ensure this, the use of manipulatives and games to spiral concepts is vital in Math. It is amazing to see them interacting and making connections about Math. As a teacher there is no better feelings then seeing that "ah ha" moment when they fulling understand something. I have seen this happen more often through hands on practice.
