My orchestra class is large - about 55 students, ranging from grades 9-12... and one of me. Although we talk about practice techniques, give specific instructions on what to practice, it is hard to give each student exactly what they need.
I've created a subsection of the class which is given class time to use as individual practice. These students will work on their own or in pairs 2 or 3 days a week, then will have a chance to put their new skills into context when they rejoin the full orchestra for the rest of the week.
These students will be paired with older, more experienced students who receive private music instruction, and have been taught the process of self reflection, analysis and creating a challenge for the next step. We have created a culture in our Band and Orchestra classes of mentoring and giving back to the school and community. This project will be part of that.
