My music students range from grade 6-12 in a public middle and high school. 80% of our district's demographic lives in poverty. Many come from broken homes, but the students are coping well with their situations/ challenges and they enjoy coming to school. Some are very talented and actually want to pursue a career in music once they've graduated. I don't doubt that they will become successful in whatever field they choose, as long as we teachers do our best to provide them with the tools that they need to become self-sufficient. I believe that if the students are given the guidance and proper direction, they will succeed and become young adults who will look back on their days in school being very grateful for the opportunities that were provided to them. Some call my classroom their home away from home. A few have done much better in school because they have a class that they look forward to every day. That's what music can do!
