My students don’t read any classic literature – yet. My 1,000 students in grades six through eight come predominantly from low-income families with approximately 75% of the children enrolled in the free breakfast/free lunch program. But what they lack in material resources is made up for by their enthusiasm and curiosity about the world. All they need are some high-interest, low-level books that will pique their interest and get them started on the reading path to success.
