In 2009, the New York Times identified us as the most diverse school district in the United States. Our students are very proud of that designation, and welcome our many newcomers. The newcomers to our classes have often come from refugee camps in unstable parts of the world. In addition to those challenges, our school has over 10% of our students living in a situation defined as homeless. They crave stability somewhere in their lives and sometimes we at school. We are the only middle school in our district, which means all of our elementary students transition to our school where we help them prepare for the next chapter in their secondary learning. Students form friendships in our hallways, classrooms, and various events that become vital to them as they move onto high school together. We have 8th graders that mentor our incoming 6th grade students as they move from elementary to middle school; we strive toward a culture at our school is supportive and safe.
