My school is not only a Title 1 school, but it is also in Program Improvement. Fifty percent of my first grade students are English language learners and approximately the same percentage of students also receive free or reduced lunch. Twenty percent of my students are designated with special needs.
Many of my students entered my first grade class lacking basic literacy skills. It is my job to try to close the achievement gap and bring these students to grade level standards. Research shows that students who struggle in first grade, usually continue to struggle in school.
