My personal library is my great pride. However, in the recent months I have realized how much it lacks in books about and for students of the variety of cultures and colors that appear in my classroom year to year. The characters in much of my library do not at all represent the colors and cultures of the students I teach.
The books I have chosen specifically are stories my students will recognize in themselves as well as teach them about civil rights in a language they will understand of kindness and empathy.
