My school site is considered the third poorest school in our county. 91% of the children qualify for free lunches. 80% are second language learners. This translates into a class of struggling readers and writers. They lack life experiences to write about. Books are a window to the world for them. I teach first grade which builds the foundational skills that they rely on for a lifetime of reading and writing. The children are adorable and want to learn. Currently, I have 13 active boys and 11 sweet girls. They are the most talkative class I have had in sixteen years of teaching! Not only does it mean it is a noisy class, but they have a lot to say about the stories we are reading. I love the kids and want to see them succeed in life. Most of these children came to me below grade level. It is my hope and desire to get them through first grade prepared to meet the challenges of second grade. Did I mention how cute and adorable they are?
