Teaching in an inner city school with limited resources has it's challenges. The students engage in a lot of stereotypical, self-stimulatory behaviors, such as hand flapping, humming, and throwing themselves to the ground. Many of these behaviors serve as an outlet to gain the proprioceptive input they desire. These behaviors can be decreased with appropriate exercises and materials. I have a therapy ball and nest chair and do yoga with the students. However if I had more appropriate items to help the students with their sensory needs, I feel these behaviors will decrease and their academic learning could increase enabling the students to focus.
