I am looking into a new ways to teach math skills and prepare my students for the upcoming state mandatory math assessment. I teach second grade at a high poverty public school. Most of my second graders are Hispanic from non-English speaking low-income families. Many of my students have academic difficulties with calendar concepts, problem solving, operations, number patterns, number sentences, place value, money combinations, algebraic thinking, and mental math because they do not have enough practice at home. However, mastery in math facts is usually the push into all of the concepts learned in second grade.
