I'm a very fortunate teacher with a job that I love dearly. I teach a very diverse group of second graders in a Title I school where over 70% receive free or reduced lunch. Many come from homes where English is not spoken there. This year our school is putting a lot of emphasis on students reading on grade level by the end of this year. Their expectation for each of us teachers is to have 80% of our students reading on grade level by year's end. My class is at 52%.
Having a listening center in my class would be a great way for them to experience a whole new world of reading chapter books since almost all of them never have any reading modeled for them at home. Also, unfortunately for them, most of them have little to no appropriate reading material for them at home.
I want to reach our school's goal of 80%. That's why I'm coming to you to ask for your help by donating a listening center along with chapter books and audio material to my classroom and my very deserving students.
