My students come from good and supportive families. They have a good work ethic and a desire to succeed...which gives them the potential to really be competitive in the college classroom with a deep understanding of the workings of mathematics.
Although they may not all end up in engineering, the understanding they receive when working with and manipulating mathematical models will give them problem solving skills that will benefit them their entire lives.
These students are curious and I bring many questions to the classroom that they want answers to - including what effects certain levels of energy have on magnitudes of earthquakes, the weight a single point of interest rate will have on retirement, etc.
But, we're doing all this by hand on the white board and wasting precious time in class while a few moments on a graphing calculator emulator could provide the demonstration in a fraction of the time, be more precise, allow for MORE opportunities for answering more questions.
