My students come from broken homes and almost 99% of our student population receives free lunch. We are located on the lower east side of Manhattan. Most of my students struggle with reading fluency and comprehension. They are limited in their experiences of the world and are in dire need of reading intervention. We lack the books and parental support needed to propel forward. For most, the classroom is their only source of security, safety, and role models. It may the only time they can hear a read aloud because their parents work nights or two jobs. My students are my children and I want to ensure they have all they need to rise beyond their circumstances.
