My kindergarten students are cheerful, loving and eager to learn. It is a privilege, a challenge and a great joy to be their teacher. They experience many difficulties living in their community that can impact their learning and achievement, however. The children at our school live in a high poverty area with crowded living conditions and exposure to gangs. Over 95% are English Language Learners. The parents of our students have very low education levels (fewer than 25% of parents are high school graduates), and are oftentimes unable to provide their children with enrichment experiences outside of the school day. My students are so excited and happy to be at school when we incorporate art into our learning. Even the children with behavioral challenges are motivated and engaged when creating art. Art is an area that even struggling students can experience success and develop a love of school and learning.
