Having various writing implements extends the experience of writing for younger students. Highlighters, white boards, tactile letters and clip on letters engage students in different ways, encouraging letter recognition and formation. The use of whiteboards is almost a daily activity in my classroom. Using the workshop model, students come to the rug with whiteboards for guided practice. The whiteboards allow me to see exactly what they are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. By offering creative ways to express themselves, I hope to create a room of new authors!
Younger students have a lot of energy and need outlets to focus that energy on learning. I have chosen a few tactile and fidget items to satisfy the need to keep moving while being an active learner. Additionally, fidget and sensory toys can help alleviate anxiety and stress for students. They can be offered as an acceptable outlet when students need a break.
