The benefits of reading go beyond the classroom. Reading helps you discover the world, it helps to develop imagination and creativity, improves vocabulary and communication skills, and allows us to educate ourselves on just about anything that we want to learn. Building positive foundations of reading for my students is key to their success. Offering culturally diverse reading selections will encourage my students to read more.
Reading books that represent different abilities, cultures, beliefs, and skin colors support a change in perceptions of these differences. Offering culturally relevant books will help to create a sense of belonging, and support connections between home and school environments. Using these books, my students and I will engage in book chats as well as create a library for independent reading selections. Having culturally relevant selections will provide my students with opportunities to make connections to their own lives.
