The students are a first grade class in a Title I school district, residing in a low income area in Michigan. Many of our students are not exposed to much literature at home, so it is vital to have as much available to them in the classroom as possible. The children are given opportunities throughout the day to read books, however many have become bored with the choices. We read a chapter of a book before leaving, and we start our day with a story each morning. The children are soaking up the reading, both independently and orally, and their reading skills are improving daily.
