My students with special needs attend a Preschool Special Education classroom in a low income area. Our class has young students with Developmental Delays, Autism, and Intellectual Disability. Despite the challenges our students and their families face, they come to school consistently and are ready to learn. The students enjoy animated storytelling, visuals, and music to accompany their story time, however our materials have become run-down over 26 years. My students present delays in their social, cognitive, and language skills. The skills of my students vary from some being able to communicate using 2-3 words, and most only using gestures and single words. Children with special needs take time to warm up to new environments. Making them feel comfortable and a part of the class usually begins in the circle area with an interesting and captivating book.
