Many of us take for granted that students will have a basic knowledge of historical figures. However, over half of my students are English learners from Mexico. Their life experiences have not included exposure to Thomas Jefferson or even Neil Armstrong, much less King Tut. The remaining students find themselves in a fast paced world of Facebook, Internet, and cable TV competing with books for the kids' attention. These kids need books that will grab them.
Biographies are a required genre of study for our state standards but most series are "boring" and "stuffy" according to one of my students as he perused the 200 year old artwork reproduced in the traditional biographies on my library shelves.
