I am blessed to work with students who have clear goals in life: they want to attend prestigious colleges and they prepare for that by studying to score well in their AP and SAT exams. If I assign chapters to be read at home, about 90% of my students complete that assignment. The discussions that we have in class prove to me that their interest in literature is growing with every text that we read.
I love it when these connections with literature turn into inside jokes that they tell each other because that makes us feel like family. Our small school, averaging 850 students every year, has limited funds, especially for the English department, even though our CST proficient and advanced percentages are within 70%. Besides textbooks, there are few resources that we can use for the upper levels and that places my students at a disadvantage when they are compared against other states/districts.
