I teach twenty-five enthusiastic first graders. Books, and the stories that they contain, fascinate my students. They enjoy having stories read to them, reading books that are at their level, and even looking at pictures in books that may be too difficult for them to read. They also enjoy our weekly trip to the school library where they may check out a book of their choosing to read. It is also a frequent occurrence to have my students ask me if they can read a book when they are done with their classroom assignments. I teach at a new school located in the city of Cudahy, California. The majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Due to recent budget cuts, our school is unable to purchase any new materials for our classrooms. Most of the students in my class do not have books at home with which to practice their reading. Instead, the only books that they regularly have access to are those in our school.
