My students go to public school in VA and are in sixth through eighth grades. They are funny, expressive, and so smart. My students form close friendships in band because music crosses all barriers and connects people from all walks of life.
Last year we experienced the strongest earthquake our area has ever seen and it changed our whole school year. We had to share space with high school students because the only high school in our county was destroyed. As a result of sharing space, we had to go to school on a Tuesday/Thursday/every other Saturday schedule and had to add extra rehearsals after school. Even though we had only 1/3 to 1/2 the instructional time as usual, my students still worked hard and were able to score "Excellent" ratings at the two competitions we attended in the spring. They showed tremendous character on each field trip and handled all the year's challenges with steadiness.
