First graders often require guidance to acquire the social-emotional skills necessary to consistently treat others with respect and handle their own emotions. Books are one of the best ways to teach these skills because they set up relatable stories that help students understand how others may be feeling and learn about empathy.
Given the events of the past year, it feels more important than ever to provide opportunities for students to discuss their feelings and concerns.
Teaching through these stories about making mistakes, about anger, about being a good friend, about kindness and empathy, give students scenarios to reflect upon if they find themselves in a similar situation. These books will be an integral part of my social-emotional instruction geared towards helping my students to adjust to the new school year and allow many opportunities for making connections and talking about emotions in a safe and loving setting.
