Distance learning has created a strain on parents, students, and teachers. As I venture into the world of teaching my first grade students how to read, I struggle to hear their soft voices take on reading sentences for the first time. Headphones with microphones will improve student-teacher communication -- students need to be celebrated at every turn when they are learning to read. They need to know what they're doing well and they need to hear their teacher's voice with words of encouragement attached to their very own name. When a student has a headset with a microphone, I will be able to hear them read their first sentences and offer them immediate words of recognition and encouragement. Today, these were my words, instead, "I'm sorry, I can't hear you. Louder, please. Can you get closer and say it louder. I'm sorry. I think I read your lips. Good work (I think)." Teaching this way is very exhausting for the teacher AND the student. When a student has a headset with a microphone, we will better be able to simulate a small classroom table shared by a teacher and students learning to read. We will much more naturally be able to communicate about books and talk about new words as we break them down and build them back up. Teaching, reading, and learning to read is supposed to be enjoyable. But doing those things via Zoom without student headsets has been a struggle to hear and be heard, for the students and their teacher alike. These headsets will make a world of difference!
