I am a first grade teacher in a rural community of North Carolina. My class has 19 students who are at many different steps in their journeys to becoming readers. Two of my students are ESL students, two are EC, and many are from poverty-stricken homes. I have been teaching first grade for eight years and must say that nothing is more rewarding than witnessing the miracle of a child learning to read.
