I teach 5th grade students. All of them are second language learners. They like to read and discuss their new found knowledge in reading with their classmates. But buying new books that would motivate their interest in reading is not always possible in our school. We qualify for title 1 but this does not cover everyone including our school including us. When I take them to our small learning center that has very few collection to choose from, I could sense their enthusiasm of just holding a new book. They beg if I could let them take the book home for extra time. Unfortunately we can't, added to this, we can only stay for an hour per week because the other students need to use the books too. They love to listen to stories I read to them. They always ask for more time, but I have to stop because we have to cover other subjects other than reading. If they could only take a book that they could read on their own time, I know I am building in them a life long reader.
