My students attend school in a high poverty area. The majority of my students are experiencing issues at home that most have never had to experience in their entire lives. Consequently, they have a hard time focusing in class and mastering the multiplication facts needed to understand mathematics at a conceptual level. Fourth grade math depends heavily upon the knowledge of basic multiplication facts. I don't want these students to start turning away from math and believing that "math is not their thing." My students are in a "time crunch" to learn their facts. The sooner they master their basic multiplication facts, the sooner math will start to make sense.
