I teach in a large city. My students come from low income families. Many are children of immigrants, or immigrants themselves, and English is not spoken at home. Some of my students are gang members, some (at times the very same kids) are classified Gifted. Some are parents, and some essentially have no parents and act as the parents of their younger siblings. We focus on academic achievement; it's an achievement these kids come to school at all.
In my physics classes (yes, the 3rd or 4th year of science), I average a total of 100 students. In one class period I have 47. I see about 30% of the kids who graduate-twice the national average for my subject. These kids are eager to learn. I do my best to challenge and inspire them.
I also teach 9th grade science. Most of these kids don't really understand what they will have to do to graduate, or what the consequences will be if they don't. My goal is to reach these kids so that I will have them again in 3 years time.
