My students already have 2 strikes against them. Most of my students come from a socioeconomically disadvantaged home. Many of them are also learning English as a second language. Due to their circumstances many do not have computers at home or parents with the necessary skills to assist them.
My 1st grade students attend a California elementary school. Most are Spanish-speaking English learners. Many of them are economically challenged and lack the home support to close the achievement gap. It is imperative that I do everything possible to encourage their learning. Despite the disadvantages, my students come to school every day with a good attitude and they are encouraged to learn. They put forth a tremendous effort and do so with smiles on their faces. They are curious about the world and often ask life-questions that relate to the topics being covered. It is my job to ensure that their motivation does not go unmatched.
