Now that my students have been promoted to sixth grade, they are expected to read at that level. However, not all of the students are able to read at a sixth grade level. In my classroom, there are English language learners and some native speakers of English. Both groups of students have a range of abilities. Some of the students read at grade level and some of the students are unable to read at grade level.
In order for the students to be able to practice their reading skills independently, they have to be able to practice with a book that is appropriate for them. The best way to allow for independent practice, is to have the Connect and Store Book Bins that will allow for the books to be separated by reading/lexile level. The students would be able to independently chose a book that would be best suited to their abilities.
To coincide with the use of the Connect and Store Book Bins the Wireless Classroom Headphones Set will allow the students to uses the classroom tablets to hear books being read at their reading level. They will be able to chose a book from the Connect and Store Book Bins and then search for the story online using the classroom tablets.
This would allow the English language learners to hear the story first and then read on their own. The native speakers would benefit as well, it would provide the opportunity for words they do not know yet to be read to them which in turn would give them the opportunity to learn the new words.
