They are also safe, responsible and respectful students who want to improve their abilities in English Language Arts. They attend a public school in a neighborhood with high-poverty, and most of the students at our school receive free/reduced lunch. They're all in 6th grade, and we've been analyzing artworks in class on Mondays and Fridays. Students are shown an image of an artwork projected on a screen, and they are asked three questions: What is going on in the artwork? What do you see that makes you say that? What more can we find? Students discuss the first two questions with a shoulder partner and then write their answers. They then share their responses with a new partner with whom they discuss the final question, What more can we find? Students have improved their writing, speaking and listening skills as a result of analyzing art. They are interested in reading more about art and what is says about the world around us. How Artists See would be perfect.
