My students come from a small rural town situated between two larger cities, but many of them have never even been to Indianapolis. When we take them on field trips to places such as the theater, they are amazed at how large the city is and how "different" the people are that they encounter. In past years, we have done an in-depth study of genocide and the Holocaust, and they find it difficult to understand how someone could destroy a whole population just because they were "different," and that leads into great conversations about "differences" and how it can be bad or good, depending on the people and circumstances involved.
While they consider themselves small-town people, they don't want to be small-minded, and a unit of study covering differences is a great step in opening my students' minds.
