Remember growing beans in sandwich bags and cups? For my students, that was the extent of science activities involving plants.
This hydroponics setup will take my students light years ahead of that! Initially, students will grow plants from seeds in this hydroponic garden, engaging in hands-on experience through "journaling, measuring, observing root structure, graphing plant growth, cloning plants..." Going beyond that, for example, I intend to integrate this hydro kit to teach in-depth about topics like photosynthesis (6CO2 + 6H2O = C6H12O6 + 6O2). I can also see my students having a blast in creating living ecosystems.
Often, I have found that students - gifted or not, are tired of the mundane,. Students crave something unique in their daily school routines. For my part, I want to show them something different and have a blast while at it.
