I've grown weary of teaching students about the properties of gases using the boring, yet reliable and easy, lecture/worksheet format. Many of the students are successful with this mode of instruction, but often have difficulty applying the concepts they have learned to understanding and explaining everyday phenomena.
With this project, students will act as engineers. They will apply what they have learned about gaseous matter to design and create a hot air balloon that is capable of flying.
In order to simulate a real-world engineering experience, students will have to work within design and budget constraints. These constraints will be based on teacher-provided materials they will “purchase” using a limited amount of chemistry class "dollars."
