I teach Theatre and English Language Development to students in grades 9-12. Youth at our school often face incredible odds. This area can be very dangerous. Gangs are an ever-present reality. Crime, unemployment and poverty are high. My English learners face an additional challenge: they have grown up in homes where English is rarely spoken, and must study extra hard to read and write at grade level. Until they do, they receive supplementary language instruction. While funding for resources is always hard to come by, my colleagues and I pursue all available avenues to provide our enthusiastic learners with rigorous interdisciplinary, arts-rich instruction that will help them become cultured 21st century citizens who find beauty and growth even in life's most challenging situations. Our school is only seven years old and we have a 90% graduation rate with many students accepted to four-year universities.
